Keep Learning

It is so important to keep learning every day. As we age, the brain changes and our mental functions change along with it. There are a lot of ways to help maintain our brain function. Learning new things helps our minds stay young.

Some of the best ways to get mental stimulation include reading, taking instructional courses, and solving word puzzles or math problems. Such activities as drawing, painting and other crafts that require mental effort and manual dexterity can help increase brain function. Taking a different route to work instead of driving the same route everyday can increase mental clarity. For some variety, take a dance class, learn to play an instrument, or learn a foreign language. Get together with friends and play a new and challenging game.

The benefits of learning relate to brain fitness, but some of the other benefits are keeping your mind sharp, improving your memory, increasing self-confidence or succeeding in the business world. According to Joe Carlozo, “if you learn one new thing every day, you will overcome 99 percent over your competition. If you take just 30 minutes a day to read a book, you will have a leg up on the competition.” If you don’t find enough time to read, use your drive time to listen to audio books. You can get audio books from public libraries, Amazon, or other online stores. At a conference we attended many, many years ago with Lowell Lundstrom, he said: “If you want to be a leader, then you need to be a reader.”

Embrace technology by staying connected in the digital world. The TED talks on YouTube have a lot of positive content. You can watch YouTube free of charge. Schedule a Zoom video conference with co-workers, or family that you have not been able to see recently. Even learning how to communicate on your iPhone or Smart phone with children and grandchildren can be a way to stay connected with family members. My granddaughter uses Snapchat, so I have learned how to use that medium to stay connected with someone I love.

With all the online resources available today, it is easier to keep on learning. For individuals, learning helps broaden horizons, instill confidence, and encourage self-development. New opportunities for business or pleasure may be identified as you continue learning.

Tom Clancy said it best: “Life is about learning; when you stop learning, you die.”

With the speed at which life passes, we have to learn to keep up with everything that is happening around us.

Make the most of everyday and do yourself a great big favor by continuing to learn something new.

Planning for your future can be something new to learn, but a lawyer, like an estate planning lawyer from Silverman Law Office, can guide you through it. Call an office today.
